The Rapture of St Peter
I was invited to contribute a painting for a Exhibition with a Stations of the Cross theme.
For one reason or another the denial of Peter was one part of the Stations that seemed to linger in my head, especially the Rooster crowing three times, poor Peter was terrified of being tortured, humiliated and murdered and fair enough too, it must be hard to hold onto your beliefs in the face of all that, he was sorry, repentant and later cruxified, which seems to over-compensate his denial.
His guilt must of felt awful to him.
I wanted to find some redemption and joy at the end of that, I’m pretty sure Peter was welcomed back into Gods grace and it all worked out for him in the end, That’s what this painting is about. I used myself as a black singleted Kiwi male to play the part of Peter as I didn’t feel comfortable asking anyone else to do it, the roosters, feathers, gold leaf and light are all intended to be evocative of his forgiveness, ascension and joy.
